The Weekly Warm Up

How did you start your week at work?

When we work out, whether it's high intensity interval training (HIIT), kick boxing, weights, or yoga, we need to warm up and stretch so we get the benefit of the workout and don't injure ourselves.

In business, we also need to warm up for the week. We can do that by looking at our priorities and goals, hopefully from our weekly review. A good method is to have three priorities for each week.

From those priorities, we can schedule "Deep Work" time as Cal Newport writes about to ensure we make progress. In 30 to 60 minutes of undisturbed and undistracted time, a few times a week (same as exercise), we can make significant progress on our goals.

However, if you start your week by opening email and responding to others' priorities, you're not warming up properly. You're sprinting to others instead of taking control and using your major muscles--your brain, focus, discipline, and calendar--to your utmost advantage.

Just imagine...If you spent three high quality hours of peak energy and focus time on your most important goal this week, what could you get done?

That's about 150 hours per year, or almost four full-time weeks on a single goal.

Once we've got ourselves focused and scheduled for the week, we can help others. We can also balance our time and efforts among helping our employees and direct reports make progress on their priorities, align resources so the company is making progress on its priorities, and dealing with, or ensuring we have capacity, for other important items that pop up.
