Observation vs. Opinion - A Scientific Approach to Management

I remember with great clarity what happened to the eraser when we dropped it in a vat of liquid nitrogen, back in a science lab at university many years ago. If I didn't see it with my own eyes, I would might an opinion on what happened to the eraser, but not facts based on observing an experiment.

In your business, have you observed your operations and work flow?

Or, do you have opinions based on hearsay and biases? As a leader, it's important for you to understand how processes work or don't work so you can improve them.

This morning, I observed the workflow of the local food bank. This is part of an assignment for university class in photography I'm taking for fun and to enhance my skills. The food bank organizes its daily inventory for shipment and distribution within the first hour of operations. Actually, they were faster than an hour. No wasted time. No missteps. People knew the drill and executed. Based on my math, that's a ratio of about seven hours of preparation to one hour of excellent execution.

What is the ratio of planning and preparation to execution in your business?
