How to Invest in your People

There are three ways to make investments in anything: time, money, and energy. Without energy, your investment would be considered passive.

So how do you invest your energy in your people?

Simple, really, but not easy, as you were expecting.

You connect with them personally and emotionally.

Now, you don't need to become their friend. But you do need to know what makes them tick and what ticks them off. This will help you to connect your vision with their role and align their natural talents with the company's objectives.

Spend some time talking on a regular basis, and at least weekly if they're working from home, on their personal life. You can do this on a group call with your team.

A simple structure for a personal update can be: personal, family, and giving back. When you're giving back, you're helping others, and that always helps us to feel better.

Investing in your people with provide a significant Return On Investment for your company. More importantly, it will make you a better boss to work with, and a better person.

Full speed ahead!

  • I have heard that 64% of people quit their job because they do not like their boss. And why is that, because they don't think their boss cares about them and their boss doesn't acknowledge them. As it becomes more difficult to hire and retain the right people, it is even more important to show an interest in who they really are. As Phil says here, we need to invest energy in them, show that we care.
