How to look and sound better on zoom, or, how to influence clients, bosses, and peers virtually

If you're selling, making presentations to clients or senior management, or trying to build your brand, looking good and sounding good matters.

Here are some quick tips on how to look better and sound better on video calls.

  1. Put a lamp in front of your face. Let people see your eyes sparkle. This will make you look more energetic and awake, even if it's your fourth hour of zooming today. A 60 watt bedroom light at the top of the ceiling is not a flattering or energizing light.
  2. Use a microphone and practice with it to make sure it's close enough. Most internal laptop microphones are terrible. I repeat, terrible.
  3. If your laptop is older and has a low resolution camera, use a higher resolution camera that can take in more light. You don't want a super high resolution camera, though, as that's never flattering.
  4. Clean up your background. Eliminate distractions.
